Kickstarter is a great way to help market a campaign (be it an album release or a tour) because of the marketing opportunities that the fund raising platform provides. It gives you a hub where you can centralise your campaign efforts as well as place to provide exclusive updates to incentivises people to back your project. This can help ‘tell the story’ of the campaign as it evolves which is really important.
Here is an interesting article in the Vice website by Nick Laugher that gives some examples on how NOT conduct a Kickstarter campaign. I’m not saying I agree with all the observations listed (his comments re the pricing of music are a little off I’d say) however it does provide food for thought on how you should approach and conduct a campaign. It’s worth a read.
