Jamie Ludwig of Sonicbids has created a great article about promotional photos for bands. You should read the article in full here however here are the main points.
1) Make sure the press can easily find these pics on your site (or your PR firm’s site), have colour and black and white photos and have different orientations available (portrait and landscape).
2) The tone of the photos should reflect the personality/tone/brand of your band (zany, moody, in your face, reflective) etc.
3) Credit the photographer
4) Make sure the photos are of high quality. Remember what we said yesterday about promotional materials: if your photos suck, YOU suck!
5) Update them every year or so, the press doesn’t like to reuse the same ones.
