How Sam Smith Is Helping Change The Rules For Music Videos

Spotify users may have come across a video exclusive of Sam Smith’s new song ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ on the platform.  The video is a bit of a game changer as it appears to be professionally shot but framed to look like it’s been recorded on a mobile phone!

Sam Smith’s new ‘lo-fi’ video.

This video has a 9:16 ratio and is cropped to look like a Facebook live/Snapchat video.

So, let’s take a step back.  One of the biggest pop artists in the world has released a video in a manner which which could have been shot by yourself on your phone to promote one of your own songs.

Why has it been done in this manner?  Well, it’s an attempt at intimacy and authenticity to get the artist ‘closer to the listener’. This is something that DIY artists can be better at than the major artists and it should be an encouragement for you to do the same. You don’t need a lot of moneym just get your phone out and get filming!

The rules are changing for music promotion and this is great for DIY artists such as yourself.  The takeaway from this lesson is you don’t need to spend a fortune on your music videos, you can record your next music promo on your mobile phone and be like Sam Smith!
