An Easy Way For Musicians To Improve Their Branding

Most DIY musicians struggle at the concept of branding, that method of differentiating, describing and emphasising who you are and what you stand for. Here’s a simple exercise you can do today to help improve your branding effectiveness as a musician.

branding

Write down 10 adjectives which describe the qualities of your music. These adjectives could be:

Messy
Cool
Mischievous
Raucous
Angry
Sexy
Dangerous
Aloof
Arty
Gentle
Uplifting
Jolly
Mysterious
Noisy
Tasteless
Dazzling
Tender
Venomous
Greasy

Now consider the following: Can people see these ‘traits’ not only in your music but in your band photography, the clothes you wear on stage, the language and phraseology used in your social media posts?

If they can, you are well on the way to creating a ‘brand’ and you are adept at telling and showing people who you are as an artist.  This reinforces and ‘calls back’ to your music. If people can’t see this, you now know what to do!

Takeaway Tip

Branding is understanding.  To create a brand, the elements of your music have to be seen in all aspects of your ‘musical life’
