Musicians: The Key To Beating Indifference? Be Different!

We live in an indifferent world.  With so much media out there it can be hard to attract people’s attention, even if the people in question are your own fans.

Releasing new music? “So is everyone else and I’m quite pressed for time here, I can’t listen to everything.  I already have lots of songs to listen to on my weekly new music playlist?” Playing a show?Haven’t you played that venue or that city before, many, many times…I’m not sure I need to go back and see you”. Releasing a music video?  “Yeah, I’ve seen lots of your music videos, you just stand around miming to the song, I’m not sure I need to see another one of those”. Indifference can be your biggest enemy when it comes to promoting yourself and your music.

The key to beating indifference is to be different.

Releasing some new music: in what way is it so different from your last music that people *have* to check it out?  Returning to a venue or city: can you play a different set from the last time you played?  Can you come up with a different theme for the night? Creating a music promo: can you create a music video with a difference that people will want to talk about and share?

John Mayer has created an intentionally lo-fi video that is funny, self deprecating but above all different from what he normally does and that’s getting people talking and sharing.

Be different!
