The number of platforms you have available to promote your music is both a blessing and a curse. You can use Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube…but all these channels need content. As a DIY musician should you be posting on them all?
Well, my suggestion would be not to spread yourself too thinly. You only have a finite amount of time at your disposal. Take stock and ask yourself a couple of questions:
- Does my fan demographic skew naturally towards one platform more than another? If you have an audience made up of people 13-20 years of age, Snapchat and Instagram should be a priority. If you are a female country artist with a mostly female audience then Instagram will be your main platform.
- Where does your current audience engage with you the most? Sounds straightforward but concentrate on that platform. If you have ten times more fans on Facebook than Twitter, double down on Facebook.
You can ‘touch base’ and provide a ‘limited service’ on the other platforms but identify say your top two platforms which either perform best or are the most appropriate for your audience. Don’t wholly ignore the others but identify where the growth opportunities lie and concentrate on providing original content for those.
