What Can The ‘Spotify Spammer’ Teach You About Marketing Your Music?

Tech blog Pando recently ran a feature on Spotify ‘spammer’ Matt Farley.  Matt’s modus operandi  if that if he writes enough ‘off the wall’ songs songs (he has 16,000 on iTunes and Spotify) despite Spotify’s tiny micro payments such an extensive catalogue is enough to generate a modest revenue.

So what can you take from this:

  • Music is your best form of marketing, make more of it, it doesn’t all have to A1 studio quality. The more music you make, the more marketing opportunities you have.
  • Write songs that either connect with people or, if you are just approaching it from a marketing angle, write that people will be searching for and will want to listen to.  Matt is sacrificing art for commerce and it’s enough to make some money and get him noticed.
