My Album Release Diary: Here We Go

So, here I am, two months away from releasing the ninth album for my band.  Rather than solely giving you marketing tips (and because this is going to take a lot of my time over the next few months), I’m going to let you in on some behind the scenes ‘action’.

The albums I have successfully released with my band since 2007.

The albums I have successfully released with my band since 2007.

I’ll share how I’ll market this album and the other logistics to do with an album release that you may not think about. Hopefully, this should help you with your next release. Here’s some my first thoughts:

We’re releasing the album to coincide with a tour.

Back in the old days you ‘toured the album’, now you ‘album the tour’. Having two marketing activities at once helps the ‘plot’ in terms of promotion.  A tour, an album, playing lot’s of festivals….all these activities are ‘currency’ and this adds to the value of your band in terms of getting promotion.

I’m going to invest in the marketing of the album.

I’m going to see how much a plugger will be for a ‘focus track’ from the album (a single that’s not a single’ just one that is being promoted).  I’ll be taking out Facebook ads, possibly Twitter ads, possibly YouTube ads. How much am I going to spend? Not sure yet, depends how much a plugger costs and whether I feel it will be worth the investment.  Plugging isn’t always the best return on investment.

Next time…what have I already done wrong!

Got any questions about this post or how you can better market yourself?
