Coverage in music press and blogs is a great way to get your music in front of a new audience. Jhoni Jackson over at Sonicbids has written some great tips on how to increase your chances of getting that press. Here are the main points for you in 60 seconds or less.
Select The Correct Writer
Don’t fire off dozens of emails to every blog, pinpoint the right media outlet for your music. If outlet has several writers choose the one who is most likely to cover your story.
Craft Your Subject Line
You can include several news points in the subject line but put the most newsworthy item first so it can be seen. Here’s an example
The Terror 909s sign to Mogitech records // New Shows Announced for December
Include dates of releases/tours/shows in the subject if possible
Craft Your Email
Outline the ‘press release’ items of the news story in the first part of the email. Then give an abridged band bio then social media info and press contacts. Click here for a good template to follow.
Be A Pro
Be professional, polite and follow a good standard of email etiquette.
Develop A Relationship
Media and all types of music promotion relies heavily on developing and exploiting relationships. If you get coverage, cultivate and nurture a relationship with that writer. Say thanks, follow and interact with them on social media). This will pay dividends long term and should improve your chances of getting future coverage.
